unable to find group member permissions

Hi
Are there any group permissions anywhere as some groups can see the forums and other cannot

Hello there,

Yes, this is classified using Ranks.

Go to Admin Panel > Menu > Forum Boards > edit each boards as you can see there is a settings at the bottom part that lets you decide whether which ranks can only access that forum board.
